Seattle City Council
Councilmember Sally J. Clark

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE: May 30, 2008

CONTACTS: Dan Nolte, Clark Office, 206-684-5327; George Howland, Jr. Council Communications, 206-684-8159

Town Homes-Can the Patient be Saved?
Councilmember Clark hosts events to encourage good design of multi-family housing

SEATTLE - Councilmember Sally J. Clark is hosting two events to encourage good design of new town homes in Seattle neighborhoods. Councilmember Clark , chair of the Planning, Land Use and Neighborhoods Committee, said, These meetings will be a great chance to talk proactively about housing choices, affordability and neighborhood-friendly design.

Up until the past dozen years or so Seattle didnt have many town homes. Seattle was mostly single-family homes with yards and apartment buildings. Growth management, Seattles overall attractiveness as a place to live, and cheap financing changed that. Now, Seattle has lots of town homes-the City estimates that 8,000 town homes have been built in the last eight years.

While some new town homes blend into the neighborhood or, even better, stand out as well-designed additions, others are reviled by the neighbors for mediocrity, canyon-creating fences, asphalt wastelands, and impossible to navigate garage entries. The fault lies not just with imagination, but also with Seattles development rules. The City can do better. These upcoming forums are the start of Councilmember Clarks effort to improve town homes design.

First Forum: Courtyard Housing in Portland, Oregon, Monday, June 2, 5 p.m., City Hall, 600 Fourth Avenue in the Bertha Knight Landes Room on the First Floor.

Second Forum: Town Homes-Can the Patient be Saved?, Saturday, June 7, 10 a.m., Capitol Hill Arts Center, 1621 12th Ave

All events are free and open to the public. No need to RSVP.
-30-

Visit the Seattle City Council website at www.seattle.gov/council where you can view Council meetings in progress and access previous meetings. All members of the public may receive Council news releases by contacting George Howland Jr., Council Communications, 206-684-8159, vog.elttaes|dnalwoh.egroeg#vog.elttaes|dnalwoh.egroeg

Capitol Hill Chamber of Commerce Announces 15th Ave Street Sweep

WHEN: Saturday, May 10, 2008 • 10:00 AM – 12:00 PM
WHERE: Group Health Courtyard, 15th & John
START 10:00 AM: Live music, welcome by special guests, free t-shirt, Starbucks coffee and pastries, bagels provided by The Bagel Deli
SWEEP: 15th Avenue between Denny and Roy, all cleaning supplies will be provided
FINISH 12:00 PM: Piecora’s New York Pizza and surprise entertainment
Pre-registration is not required

The 15th Ave Street Sweep is a community cleanup by neighborhood residents, teams from local businesses and organizations, and Capitol Hill Chamber of Commerce members. Volunteers will sweep the sidewalks, pick up litter, clean windows, paint over graffiti, and remove outdated posters from light poles. Nearly 100 volunteers showed up for the cleanup last fall. All cleaning supplies will be provided.

“This will be a wonderful chance for neighborhood residents and business owners to get to know each other,” said Robert Sondheim, Chair of the CHCC Clean and Safe Committee. “By volunteering a few hours of their time, each person will have the satisfaction of contributing to the beautification of Capitol Hill, and they’ll have fun doing so.”

This is the first cleanup on 15th Avenue, but in the past two years, there have been similar events on Broadway and the Pike/Pine corridor. The CHCC would eventually like to include all of Capitol Hill’s business districts in future sweeps.

About The Capitol Hill Chamber of Commerce:
The Capitol Hill Chamber of Commerce is committed to supporting an economically vital, livable community and promoting Capitol Hill as a unique urban neighborhood that is welcoming to everyone. The CHCC accomplishes this through a variety of methods including but not limited to: studying the retail climate along the Broadway corridor, building a relationship with the Mayor's office and City Council, engaging Sound Transit leadership on the Capitol Hill light rail station and public property improvements. The CHCC is also developing "clean and safe" programs that are community-controlled and not subject to the fluctuations of the City budget.

Sponsored in Part by BECU and Group Health

###

CONTACTS
Sandy Stahl
(206) 325-1493
ten.tsacmoc|lhatsydnas#ten.tsacmoc|lhatsydnas

Capitol Hill Chamber of Commerce
(206) 328-6646
www.caphillchamber.org
