Discussion aimed at finalizing the title we use on this site

We've had some discussion about what to call this site: (not in order of importance)

  1. The URL includes CHCC so that should be component
  2. Definitely needs to include Capitol Hill
  3. Should not include wiki because label is not accurate and could be confusing to non technical audience
  4. Ideally would suggest value to Capitol Hill as whole, not just CHCC business
  5. Main title and sub-label need to be short enough not to wrap/pass under navigation tabs

I can't really come up with a good way to incorporate all of these factors but I think everything but factor 4 is solved by:
Title: Capitol Hill Community Council
sub-label: a community site

Thoughts? I'd rather not churn on this forever but do want to get some consensus.

If this is to be the Web site of the Capitol Hill Community Council, then I think it makes sense to label it "Capitol Hill Community Council" and to refer to it informally, within the context of the Community Council, as "the Web site". If its scope is to be more broad than that, then I don't know what to suggest. More than a few neighborhood-wide Web sites have come and gone over the years.

As for CHCC: The Capitol Hill Chamber of Commerce has been using CHCC since shortly after it was formed in the summer of 2006. The Chamber's logo uses a stylized "chcc" on banners, signs, business cards, and letter head.

For the past 40 years, the Capitol Hill Community Council has been known formally as such and informally, within this community, as "the Community Council".

On the steering committee mailing list, I recently suggested that 1) the C-H-C-C-dot-wiki-dot-dot-org URI will be difficult to remember after hearing it quoted and difficult to locate via Web search, and 2) that we discontinue referring to this site as a wiki, as it is already more than a wiki, since it includes a forum.

Justin, agree with your title and sub-label. I also think we could get away with naming it "Capitol Hill Community" even though the URL is CHCC.wikidot. CHCC is good as a short sub-domain and is inclusive of "Capitol Hill Community" as a name.

All seem to agree on discontinuing "wiki" nomenclature.

For headers and navigation in general I'm a fan of one more level of simplifying and making it sound active:
"Community forums" -> "Discuss" or "Discussion"
"Join the CHCC Site" -> "Edit" or "Write for this site"

I'd get rid of tags until we reach a scale where they're useful. For now I bet they confuse folks more than help navigation. We can always add them in over time.

On the other hand maps, photos, videos and other neighborhood visuals help attract people to the site and make it more of a destination.

Phil said he was still hanging on to the capitolhillseattle.org domain. Does that not apply in this situation? Can't we set up the website at that URL and have it point to the wiki.

If you just need a title for the wiki then consider that a common issue is that folks in the other Capitol Hill (in D.C.) often come across our neighborhood email list capitolhillnews when searching for information — and vice versas. Keeping Seattle in there can be helpful.

Internet domain for the Community Council

The domain I registered in hopes of eventually transferring to the Community Council is capitolhillcommunitycouncil.org.

I agree re: calling it "the Community Council" rather than "CHCC" (which, on top of being confusing because of other CHCC's, means nothing to the majority of people who live on the hill). Less acronym makes for less intimidating atmosphere for the new-comers.

I'd substitute "CHCC" in the menus with "Community Council" and simplify them in general a bit (e.g., "what is the CHCC?" -> "The Community Council").
